After the war when Gimli and Legolas were such great friends they likely spent quite a bit of time together. With how slow travel by horse or foot is they'd have to spend the nights at each other's homes every now and then when they came to visit. This is the reaction of a few dwarves and a few elves to the strange creature their leader drags home every now and again.
